Markets held firm on June 5, with the Nifty and Sensex ending strong despite coming off intraday highs, as a pharma and realty rebound lifted sentiment ahead of the RBI's MPC meet tomorrow. The real spark came from the broader market, where mid- and small-cap stocks stole the show, outperforming the benchmarks. Adding to the cheer, India VIX cooled over 4 percent, signalling easing volatility. At close, the Sensex was up 443.94 points or 0.55 percent at 81,442.19, and the Nifty was up 141.10 points or 0.57 percent at 24,761.30. About 2023 shares advanced, 1479 shares declined, and 121 shares unchanged. Follow our LIVE blog for all the latest market updates All eyes are on the RBI as investors await a likely 25-basis-point rate cut on Friday, with rate-sensitive stocks in sharp focus ahead of the policy decision. Since CPI inflation in India is benign, the rate-cutting cycle has more room to go, with a minimum of two more rate cuts in 2025. The US 10-year bond yield has eased to 4.36 percent and is expected to drift lower amid signs of a slowing American economy, a medium-term positive for emerging markets like India. However, elevated uncertainty is likely to keep markets range-bound in the near term, said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. "Buying on dips remains the preferred strategy for now," he added. Among sectors, realty led the gains with a strong 1.9 percent rise, followed by pharma, which jumped 1.27 percent. Other notable performers included the infra, IT, and metal indices, which rose between 0.38 and 0.58 percent. The broader market continued to shine, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Midcap 100 climbing 0.9 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, FMCG and energy posted modest gains, while auto, consumer durables, private banks, and PSU banks saw mild declines. Shares of Eternal, previously known as Zomato, rose over 4 percent to become the top gainer on the Nifty on June 5, extdning gains for a second session in a row. Recently, Morgan Stanley reiterated as its top pick in the space, citing the company’s leadership in both food delivery and quick commerce. In today's report, CLSA said that Blinkit is now within striking distance of Zomato’s food delivery app in weekly active users, signalling a major shift in India’s online shopping habits. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories surged 4 percent to Rs 1,303 on June 5, making it one of the top gainers on the Nifty 50. The rally followed the company’s announcement of a strategic collaboration with Alvotech to co-develop, manufacture, and commercialise a biosimilar version of Keytruda (pembrolizumab) for global markets. FirstCry-parent Brainbees Solutions shares rallied over 12 percent to hit an intraday high of Rs 410 apiece earlier during the day. The stock has now pared some gains to trade at Rs 397 apiece (nearly 9 percent higher). In May this year, the company had reported a net loss of Rs 111.5 crore for the fourth quarter of FY25, which widened compared to Rs 43.2 crore a year ago. On the daily chart, the Nifty has formed an inside bar pattern and is hovering around the key demand zone of 24,500–24,475—a level that has seen repeated bounces and heavy put writing, making it a make-or-break zone in the short term. However, the inability to hold onto intraday gains and continued overhead selling pressure suggest waning buying interest. "As long as the index sustains above 24,475, there remains scope for minor pullbacks, but a decisive close below this level could open the doors toward 24,300. On the upside, a breakout above 24,850 may trigger short covering and potentially push the index toward the psychological barrier of 25,000, though that zone is expected to offer stiff resistance," Dhupesh Dhameja of SAMCO Securities said. Eternal, Dr Reddy's, Trent, Power Grid Corp, and Shriram Finance were the top gainers on the Nifty. IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and Tata Consumer Products were the major laggards on the index.
